Strawberry-TimeFaithandGrace-Fence

It’s Strawberry Time

Our first crop of strawberries are starting to ripen and we should be picking them all week!

The new “Critter-Proof” garden fence is almost complete. We are now making the five garden gates.
Special thanks to the Faith and Grace Hawk who took guard of the garden while we worked to get the fencing in place – We viewed this beastly bird as a godsend.

Next we will start laying the drip irrigation system to keep our plants watered during the hot months of July and August.

Childcare – Watch children on the playground while their parents help in the garden.
And of Course: Weeding, Watering, Planting, and Harvesting

A BIG, FAT THANK YOU TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS AT WALNUT CREEK CHURCH!

Over Memorial Day Weekend some 40 members of Walnut Creek Church put in over 120 volunteer hours in the Faith & Grace Garden planting 360 sweet potatoes, over 100 pounds of seed potatoes and 280 broccoli and cabbage plants.

The volunteers also completed putting in all the fence posts for our new “critter proof” garden fence.

Tomorrow night (Wednesday) we plan to attach the fencing to the posts and install the garden gates. Hopefully, we will finish the fence then now before the rabbits find all those tasty young plants! Please plan come out to lend a hand between 6:30pm – 8:30pm. The weather should be beautiful!! The Monday afternoon crew from Walnut Creek Church poses for a selfie after working in the garden.

Can You Dig This? A Message from Amy Joens of Global Shapers

I am part of a group in Des Moines called Global Shapers. We have recently learned of the opportunity to host a screening of CAN YOU DIG THIS at the Fleur Cinema as a way to engage people around growing food and how it has transformed a south LA neighborhood. With all the great groups and efforts to address food access & the food system, we wanted to offer this as a way to spark dialogue and action. CAN YOU DIG THIS follows the inspirational journeys of four urban gardeners, discovering what happens when they put their hands in the soil.

This screening is on Tuesday, June 28 at the Fleur Cinema. The screening will begin at 7:30 p.m. We are inviting people to come at 7:00 p.m. to meet like-minded people and share what’s happening in the Des Moines metro.

In order to make this screening a reality, we need to sell 61 tickets by June 17. Reserve your ticket here and share with friends & family… And our event is on Facebook!

We will start planting melons, squash, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli next.
Sweet potato plants will arrive on Friday so we hope to get our potatoes in over the long weekend.

Here are our volunteer times if you can give us a hand:
M-W-F  6:30pm – 8:30pm
Sat  10:30 – Noon
Other times available by appointment

U.S. beekeepers lost 44% of their colonies in the last year.
That’s a near-record loss and WAY too high for colonies to keep up. We must help. One way is by planting more pollinators in our yards, gardens and flower beds.

Weather permitting, tomorrow at 6:30 we will be planting 17 different kinds of pollinators in the garden flower beds with the help of the Polk County Conservation Commission.

Here is a picture of the butterfly weed we will plant tomorrow night

Harvest Totals To Date:

Asparagus – 25lbs
Kale – 50lbs
Onions – 105lbs
Total -180lbs

News from our friends at The Lord’s Acre……

Nutrition for Older Adults: Tufts University, in partnership with the AARP Foundation, released an updated MyPlate for Older Adults.  It reflects the latest nutrition science and is intended to target the unique needs of the 50+ community.  See here for the release. And here for a new website with tips, recipes and more.

For consumers who are trying to understand the concerns about GMO foods:  Here’s a great article in Civil Eats by veteran Reuters reporter, Carey Gillam, about how FDA plans to start testing for glyphosate residues in food. Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide (thanks in large part to genetically engineered crops designed to resist the chemical in various formulations including Monsanto’s RoundUp herbicide), recently linked to cancer.

Faith & Grace Garden is on the grow…
come to the 2016 Garden Update on Sunday afternoon, March 13 in the Parish Hall at St. Timothy’s

While nothing is really growing in the Faith & Grace Garden yet, garden coordinator Mark Marshall now has 600 pepper plants growing in his basement. Next he will start tomatoes, then cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower. Later he will start melons and squash.marks-peppers

2016 Garden Plan – The where, when and how of vegetable planting, weed control, etc.
Come learn about what we have planned for this growing season:

Food Practices and Climate Change – How what we eat and how we obtain our food affects climate change. Also, introducing regenerative agriculture to the Faith & Grace Garden.

Pollinator Program – We are partnering with Polk County Conservation on the program to introduce more pollinators to the garden and provide education

Volunteer opportunities – Garden fence, high tunnel renovation, blueberry bush planting, and more. The Faith and Grace Garden is a wonderful place to volunteer your time to help those in need within your community, meet wonderful people, and to learn about how to cultivate nourishing food and meaningful relationships with nature and humanity.

Leave the Door Open
We have to live as close as possible to all that leaves the door open to the ‘holy.’ … The problem is not to sink into apathy. The chores, the household tasks, do provide a kind of frame, but I get more and more impatient with bothering about things…. Gardening is altogether different. There the door is always open into the ‘holy’—growth, birth, death. Every flower holds the whole mystery in its short cycle, and in the garden we are never far away from death, the fertilizing, good, creative death.

Is It Time to Thin Out Your Flower Beds?Flower

The Faith & Grace Garden needs spring and summer perennials for sun: Tulips, Daffodils, Daylilies, Siberian Iris, Black Eyed Susans, Coreopsis, Daisies, Salvia, Lavender, etc.

Are you thinning your flower beds and wondering what to do with all those extra tulip, daffodil, day-lily, allium, etc, bulbs? Or do you have some native flowering plants?

The Faith & Grace Garden is in need of spring and summer perennials, transplants, etc. Must tolerate full sun. Please sort by color and print color and variety on the container along with some planting instructions. Just drop them by on the picnic table by St. Tim’s.

What’s going on in the garden now?

We are harvesting tomatoes, beans, peppers, kale, turnips and radishes.
Soon we will plant garlic for harvest next June.
We have some cover crops in; a mixture of rye, hairy vetch and clover with more to plant.
We will be planting spring bulbs in the flower beds as soon as the ground dries out.
We are marking off fence line for our new “critter proof” fence. We hope to get the posts up yet this fall.

Picnic in the Garden
Friday, May 1 6pm
Let’s Celebrate the Growing Season!!Family Night Picnic Last Year

This will be our first picnic of the year, and you are invited! Here’s the schedule:

6 pm or so – Potluck – Bring a side dish or something from the deli. Brats, burgers and a vegetarian casserole will be provided. There are picnic tables but you might bring a lawn chair, too.

The picnic area, garden and playground are in close proximity of each other so it’s pretty easy to watch the children.

8:30 pm or so – Gardening Conclusion

Please contact Tim Goldman at 745-9842 or timothyjgoldman@gmail.com  by 3 pm on Friday if you plan to attend the potluck.

Sweet Potatoes Anyone?
Sweet PotatoWe will have about 400 sweet potato plants available in mid-May at no charge for other donation gardens (school, faith, refugee, etc.)
Please reply to this message if interested with your information and number of plants.

General News:

OF VEGETABLES and BATHTUBS: Here’s a 6 minute video on growing food in bathtubs. Outside, of course.

PEDAL POWER –   Bicimáquinas are delightful machines that amplify human power at home, on farms, and anywhere legs can pump pedals. They are handmade from old bikes, concrete, wood, and metal. Check out the blender by Maya Pedal in Guatamala. Wouldn’t you love to see these cranking out fruit smoothies at festivals this summer?

GOOD NEWS ABOUT SCHOOL LUNCHES:   The USDA has just announced new grants to help schools get equipment and training to make healthier school lunches. These lunches work, too, according to a new study in the journal Childhood Obesity. Kids began throwing away less food and eating more fruit after the healthier school lunch standards were adopted. This is despite the shameful fighting by the School Nutrition Association, described by Mark Bittman. I don’t believe the lunch ladies I’ve known would support reducing school nutrition.
