Volunteer Appreciation Dinner – Friday, July 26

All of our volunteers, past and present, are invited at an appreciation dinner on next Friday. Social time – 5:30pm, Dinner – 6:00pm, in the Parish Hall at St. Tim’s.

There is nothing to bring. We will be in the air conditioned indoors. Come see old friends and let us say, thank you for all you help over the years! Please let us know if you can attend by contacting Tim Goldman by Wednesday, July 24, at 745-9842 or timothyjgoldman@gmail.com.

Too much heat, Volunteer Hours Change: For now, we are no longer having volunteer time on Saturday mornings. We may resume after the summer heat subsides.

Children in the GardenChildren in the Garden
“I have younger children. May we visit the garden?”   Frequent inquiry from parents

Children are very welcome in the Faith & Grace Garden. The best time for children to visit the garden is during our regular volunteer times. Volunteer hours are 6:30pm – 8:30pm, Monday through Friday.

There are playgrounds on the east and west sides of the garden so children can spend time both gardening and playing. There are picnics tables on the east side of the garden for snacks, too.

For preschoolers, there is also a new Children’s Garden in the northwest corner of the Faith & Grace Garden. The Children’s Garden is a fenced area with pole bean teepees, a sunflower room and several small garden plots. Easy access to the Children’s Garden is available by parking in lot at the Covenant Presbyterian Church. This fall there will be two benches added in the Children Garden.

Here are some things consider when bringing your child, grandchild or group to visit the garden.

Call ahead. Help us plan for your child’s visit to the garden. This is especially important if you would like to bring a group of children to the garden. Together, we can consider conditions in the garden and pending weather. On your first visit to the garden, we would also like to give you a brief garden tour that will include restroom and drinking water locations.

Safety First. We adhere to risk management guidelines in the garden. (Available for download soon) We will ask you read and sign our risk management guidelines on your first visit to the garden.

What to bring/ what to wear. Dress for the weather in clothes that can get dirty. We recommend sturdy shoes (not flip-flops). Apply sunblock, bug spray, and bring a water bottle. We try to have these items on-hand for you to re-apply. Bring a hat for additional sun protection.

Other things to bring might include a magnifying glass, children’s field guides to plants, birds or insects, and a small pad and pencil. While we supply gardening tools, you are welcome to bring your own.

Volunteer hours in the Faith & Grace Garden:
Monday – Friday, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm  Saturday, 10:30 am – NOON

Here’s what’s happening in the Faith & Grace Garden this week:
Most of the fruits and vegetables are now planted in the Faith & Grace Garden.

This week we will tighten up the garden fence to keep the bunnies out, plant the flower beds, and mulch the strawberry patch.
The pre-schoolers will be planting in the Children’s Garden. Here’s a diagram of the garden:

We have plenty of extra seed potatoes and a few sweet potato sets for anyone who can use them. Please contact Mark Marshall for details wdmmarshall@msn.com

Memorial Day Picnic in the Garden. On Monday, May 27, we will be gardening at 4 pm and then have a potluck picnic at 6 pm. Bring a side dish or something from the deli and table service. There are picnic tables but you might bring a lawn chair, too. Please join us for either or both events.

Last week we said good-by for the summer to most of our student volunteers from Dowling Catholic High School. Their energy, enthusiasm, and fun-loving presence will be missed! We expect to see a few of them throughout the summer working on service requirements for next year.

Valley High School exchange student Meutia W K Hakim was recently selected to take part in the 2013 Real Soil, Real Food, A Real Difference summer camp offered through The Wallace Centers of Iowa. We are very proud of her.

Nationwide Insurance employees made a major contribution of time and effort to completing the Children’s Garden. Below Nationwide employees are working on the fence that surrounds the Children’s Garden.

Help! Thursday morning summer transportation needed for Refugee Program Starting Thursday, June 6 from 8am – 10:30am and continuing through the summer, 10 elder southeast Asian retired farmers will be volunteering in the Faith & Grace Garden through Lutheran Services. We need to transport them to and from the garden. If you have a vehicle and would be willing to help, please contact Tim Goldman for details at timothyjgoldman@gmail.com or by calling 745-9842.

Gardening now is in full swing! (Once the snow stops!!!)
Please come join us! Volunteer times are M/F, 6:30pm – 8:30pm and Saturday from 10:30am – Noon.

Here’s what is happening at the Faith & Grace Garden:

Cinco de Mayo in the Garden
Saturday, May 4 10:30am – 4pm
Music, dancing, refreshments, cooking demo and gardening. Children’s activities: piñata and garden seed games. Come celebrate the start of the growing season to a Latin beat!
In case of bad weather, our Cinco de Mayo celebration will move indoors to the Covenant Presbyterian Church at 1025 Ashworth Road (on the corner of 28th and Ashworth just west of the Garden) with the following rain or shine events:

Cooking demonstration  – Noon – 1 pm
Children’s activities – 1 pm – 2pm

Flower lovers! Plan to join us on this Saturday morning (rain or shine) at 11am at Covenant Presbyterian Church to learn about the design and planting of our new flower beds. Elvin McDonald will be on-hand to discuss our plans.

Edible Urban Garden Tour comes to the Faith & Grace Garden on Saturday, May 12 from 11am – 2pm. There will be a container garden demonstration and refreshments. Come to the parking lot north of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church at 1020 24th Street (on the corner of 24th and Ashworth just east of the Garden).

The Children’s Garden is about 70% completed with a surrounding wood fence and garden pathways covered with wood chips (shown in brown). Next we will put up a chicken wire fence to keep the critters out and put in the play area and the children’s garden plots.

Potatoes, peas, lettuce and spinach are planted and the salad bowl crops are about an inch tall. We would like to plant more onions and potatoes this week.

The high tunnel was finished on Sunday. The high tunnel covers a section of the garden soil (36’x20’) and absorbs the sun’s energy which in turn warms the ground. We can plant tomatoes and peppers in the high tunnel now despite the cool and wet weather fluctuations.
Special thanks to Dave Johnson for his expert assistance in erecting the tunnel!

44 blueberry bushes were planted on Saturday on the west side of the garden. Students from Dowling Catholic High School and Mark Marshall are shown digging all the holes.

Free to a Good Home – 250 gallon portable water tank
For details please contact Tim Goldman at 745-9842 or timothyjgoldman@gmail.com.

Hello Garden Friends:

Now that the temperature is really starting to drop, those food pantry gardens that are not finished for this season are really busy with the harvest.

Wow! What a growing season it was….from all local food pantry gardens nearly 30,000 pounds of vegetables were donated to food pantries in 2012!! (I should have a final total later this month.) To put that number in perspective, last year 15,000 pounds of vegetables were donated all total from the local food pantry gardens.

Here’s what’s happening in a garden near you:

Agape Garden, 7384 NW 16th Street in Ankeny (Next to the Faith Chapel and close by John Deere)
Tonight is last night for picking vegetables at the Agape Garden. Come help finish up a wonderful year. If you know anyone who can use green tomatoes, there are lots of nice ones on the ground. You can bag these in brown paper bags and they will slowly turn red and ripen. I do it every year. We have too many.

The Agape Garden has harvested and donated 15,079 lbs. in 2012!!
Please call Craig Crist to verify times @ 515-577-8260 leave message if no answer.

Hello Garden Friends:

Cool evenings and sunny afternoons are wonderful times to be in the food pantry gardens. Many gardens have second crops of peas, spinach, mustard, turnips, beets and lettuce coming up.
Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, broccoli and potatoes are still strong producers.

Some of us are looking forward to planting garlic soon.

Becoming Better Off

Peter Maurin

The world would be better off if people tried to become better. And people would become better if they stopped trying to become better off. For when everybody tries to become better off, nobody is better off. But when everybody tries to become better, everybody is better off.

Everybody would be rich if nobody tried to become richer. And nobody would be poor if everybody tried to be the poorest. And everybody would be what he ought to be if everybody tried to be what he wants the other fellow to be.
